You Don't Attract What You Want - You Attract What You Focus On

Updated: Aug 31
Most business owners assume growth is purely a numbers game: more outreach, more content, more follow-ups, more hustle. Work harder, get more. It's the model most of us were taught, and on the surface it seems to make sense.
But there's a mechanism running underneath all of it that most people never stop to examine - where your attention actually goes, moment to moment, day to day. And that mechanism may be shaping your results more than any strategy you've ever implemented.

The Filter You Don't Know You Have
There's a part of your brain called the Reticular Activating System (RAS) - a bundle of nerves at the base of the brainstem that acts as a filter, deciding which of the millions of pieces of information around you actually reach your conscious awareness.
Your brain is bombarded with far more sensory input every second than you could ever consciously process. So it filters. Ruthlessly. And it doesn't filter randomly - it filters based on what you've told it matters, through your repeated focus, your emotions, and the thoughts you return to again and again.
This is why, when you're thinking about buying a certain car, you suddenly start seeing that exact model everywhere - in car parks, on the motorway, parked outside your neighbour's house. The cars aren't new. They were always there. Your awareness of them is what's changed.
It's the same reason a pregnant woman starts noticing pregnant women everywhere, or someone who's just learned a new word suddenly hears it in conversations all week. The information was always present. Your filter simply wasn't tuned to let it through - until it was.
The exact same mechanism plays out in business. Constantly. Quietly. Whether you're aware of it or not.
Chasing vs. Attracting
When your attention is locked onto lack - the client who hasn't replied, the deal that hasn't closed, the income that hasn't arrived this month - your RAS stays tuned to that frequency. You become hyper-aware of absence. Every unanswered email, every quiet inbox, every stalled conversation confirms the story you're already telling yourself: it's not working. I'm not enough. This isn't happening for me.
And here's the trap - the more evidence you gather for that story, the more real it feels, and the tighter your focus locks onto lack. It becomes a loop. Not because the universe is against you, but because your own filtering system is faithfully doing exactly what you've trained it to do.
Now contrast that with genuinely shifting your internal focus - not through forced positivity or pretending everything is fine, but through a real, felt change in where your attention and emotional energy are directed. Towards how you want to feel. Towards the outcome you're building, rather than the gap you're standing in.
When that shift happens, your RAS starts filtering for entirely different information. Conversations that suddenly feel relevant. Opportunities you would have scrolled straight past a month earlier. Connections that seem to appear out of nowhere, at exactly the right moment.
It isn't magic, and it isn't wishful thinking. It's attention, directed differently - allowing your brain to notice what was likely there all along.
Why This Matters More Than Most Strategies
We're taught that business growth is almost entirely tactical - the right funnel, the right pitch, the right follow-up sequence, the right number of touchpoints. And strategy absolutely matters. But strategy executed from a frequency of scarcity, urgency and desperation rarely lands the way we hope, no matter how well-crafted it is.
People - and by extension, opportunities - respond to energy before they respond to words.
When you're chasing from a place of lack, it shows. Consciously or not, it comes through in your tone, your timing, your presence in a room or on a call. Clients and collaborators pick up on it even when they can't name what they're sensing. And when you release that grip — not by giving up on your goals, but by raising your own internal state first - you change what you're available to receive, and how you show up while receiving it.
This is the real, often overlooked work behind sustainable business growth: not simply doing more, but becoming the frequency that the opportunities you want are already resonating at. Strategy without this shift is like sending a well-written letter to the wrong address - technically correct, but never quite landing.
A Small Shift to Try This Week
Notice, honestly, what you've been tuning into.
Is your attention locked on what's missing - the client who hasn't said yes, the income that hasn't arrived, the growth that hasn't happened yet? Or is it beginning to notice what's already aligning, even in small, easy-to-miss ways?
For one week, redirect that focus. Not by ignoring your goals or bypassing real feelings, but by consciously shifting your emotional state around them - from waiting to already aligned, from chasing to already resonating. Notice, without forcing it, what your RAS starts letting through as a result.
You might be surprised what begins to show up.
